New brake system for short lines: New York Air Brake's CCB-26 brings older locomotives into the computer age
Trains Magazine
As a matter of simple economics, a locomotive in the shop is an asset setting idle. New York Air Brake estimates that the mean time between failures and the rapid repair time of its computer controlled brake can reduce repair costs 75 percent compared with conventional locomotive brake systems. The company further estimates life-time cost savings of 38 percent. >>> pdf

Fortescue Railway has already raised the bar for Heavy Haul Operations
International Railway Journal
…The wagons are operated as married pairs with a single brake controller. The trains are equipped with an electronically-controlled pneumatic (ECP) brake system supplied by Knorr-Bremse. “ECP allows us to stop a 220-wagon 35,200-tonne train traveling at 75 km/hr in 760m, or an empty train of the same length traveling at 79km/hr in 486m…” >>> pdf

Onboard monitoring technology continues to provide railroads with better ways to monitor and track cars and locomotives
Progressive Railroading
New York Air Brake's Locomotive Engineer Assist Display Event Recorder (LEADER®) is a real-time onboard monitoring tool designed to enhance the locomotive engineer's train-handling capability. LEADER helps engineers make critical evaluations of operating parameters and can "greatly increase fuel efficiency, reduce equipment wear, and promote more profitable procedures and techniques," the company says. >>>pdf

BNSF kicks tires on fuel optimization system
Progressive Railroading
Featuring software that’s integrated into the in-cab electronic communication system, the fuel optimization system is fed origination/destination and track data, train consist information and temporary speed restrictions via satellite. After a trip is initialized at origin, the real-time system determines the most fuel-efficient train handling techniques for the move. The system then prompts the locomotive engineer to make necessary throttle and braking adjustments. >>>pdf

Onboard Fuel Efficiency System Receives Positive Grade in Testing
BNSF
After the trip is initialized at the origin, the fuel optimization system goes a step further and identifies - in real-time - the most fuel efficient train handling for that particular train. The system prompts the locomotive engineer for throttle changes and required braking to reach optimum fuel efficiency according to the distinct characteristics of the trip. >>>pdf

Class Is on fuel management: Good to the last drop
Platts Coal Outlook
One system NS is developing is a computer-based system called LEADER that calculates the operating parameters for a given route, taking into account topography and changes in speed limits, and it tells the engineer the best throttle settings and brake applications to reduce fuel consumption. >>> pdf
