Overlay installations              Car Control Device

There are several EP-60 overlay installation options, suitable for both new and retrofit applications. These can be easily upgraded to a standalone configuration.

Car Control Device (CCD) The heart of the car-braking portion of the EP-60 system is the Car Control Device (CCD). This is an integrated, microprocessor-based module which delivers EP control at each car. The CCD is mounted to the control valve's pipe bracket in place of the service portion. Each CCD is self-contained and includes: an electronic control module, long-life battery, power management electronics, pressure transducers, proportional solenoids, and a relay valve. The CCD is designed for very low power consumption.

TCC

Trainline Communications ControllerOperator brake commands are transmitted from the locomotive via the Trainline Communications Controller (TCC). This unit houses the brake control module and a 486 single-board computer (SBC). The SBC performs several important functions, including the management of the AAR-approved network protocol, Echelon ® LonWorks™. It also manages in-train serialization, fault monitoring, data logging and the event recorder interface. Software downloads to each CCD are also implemented through the TCC.

Diagnostics and Sensor InterfaceEP-60 has the ability to provide diagnostics at the individual car and locomotive level. System performance is continuously monitored, with car status reports being transmitted to the Trainline Communications Controller. Each CCD has a car-sensor interface to provide data flow from the car sensors to the locomotive, allowing real-time monitoring of selected car equipment parameters.

CCB II

Compatibility & FlexibilityEP-60 utilizes a standalone and/or overlay approach, enabling the ECP system to be fully compatible with all existing pneumatic hardware. It meets or exceeds all AAR ECP specification requirements, and can be configured with a portable locomotive package. EP-60's communication network has additional available bandwidth, providing the capacity to handle car-sensor data flow.

OIU

Graduated Application/ReleaseEP-60 features constant brake pipe charging. The use of analog solenoid valves provides proportional brake cylinder control, as well as graduated application and release.

Power Supply

Variable Load BrakingEP-60 includes the option for variable load braking, which permits a uniform brake ratio at all car loads. Improved handling results due to a reduction of the in-train forces generated while braking a mix of empty, partially loaded, and fully loaded cars.

Automatic Train ManifestEP-60 stores and correlates information that permits automatic train manifest and serialization. Individual car ID units provide key data on car characteristics and brake ratios. This information allows for the most cost-efficient consist configuration attainable.

Junction Box

High Reliability & Low MaintenanceThe EP-60 design has been thoroughly field and laboratory tested under extreme environmental conditions to ensure that high reliability targets are met. Its modular design, and the fact that no calibration is required after installation, keeps maintenance requirements low.

EOCC

SafetyConventional emergency pneumatic braking is designed into EP-60. Advanced trainline communication and fault-tree control logic provides fail-safe operation. A trainline power safety interlock, which protects the crew from high voltage during train make-up, further enhances EP-60's safety.
